Heating food above 100-115 F destroys many of the nutritional benefits.
A food dehydrator is the equivalent of an oven for the raw foodist. Dehydrators work by warming raw foods at very low temperatures to gently remove the moisture, creating new textures, variety, and colour to your raw food meals.
What can you do with your food dehydrator?
Dehydrators allow you to preserve many great raw foods while they are in season and at their best. Dehydrated foods intensify in flavor, colour, and can add different textures to your meals as well.
In addition to simply preserving your foods, you can also make your own nutritionally intact versions of flatbreads, cookies and even pizza crusts. The only limit is your imagination.
Easy Dehydrating
Dehydrated fruits and sweeter vegetables make an excellent snack on the go snack. Unlike commercially available dried fruits which are commonly heat treated at high temperatures, dehydrated raw foods contain more nutrients. Dehydrated vegetables are also excellent addition to salads, simple cold pureed soups and more.
Dehydrator Recipe Ideas
Raw flax crackers are easy to make with a food dehydrator. They are a great source of healthy omega fats, and are a good basis for dips or even a raw sandwich.
Soak your flax seeds for 4-6 hours in purified water.
Add seasonings of your choosing to this and then place in the dehydrator.
Run the dehydrator for five to six hours, flip the crackers, and then run it for another five to six hours.
While this is a time consuming process, it requires very little actual labour on your part.
To make a raw food pizza crust in a dehydrator use a mixture of flax seeds, ground almonds, and ground sunflower seeds. Top with any variety of tasty and healthy raw vegetable toppings.
Being able to make raw crackers, breads and crusts can expand your raw food diet considerably, preventing boredom and providing a great basis for all sorts of yummy raw toppings, including vegetable, nut and seed based spreads.
